Odisha Weather Update: Jharsuguda Breaks 73-Year Record With 5.1°C; IMD Predicts Further Drop

The ongoing cold wave in Odisha over the past few days has severely affected daily life. Temperatures in several areas of the state have plummeted well below normal. Amidst this, the city of Jharsuguda has set a new record for the cold. On Tuesday, a minimum temperature of 5.1 degrees Celsius was recorded here, marking the lowest temperature for the month of January in the last 73 years.

According to Manorama Mohanty, Head of the Regional Meteorological Centre (IMD) in Bhubaneswar, such severe cold was last recorded in Jharsuguda in 1953. The intensity of the cold is increasing across the state due to persistent cold and dry northerly winds.

Jharsuguda: The Coldest Place In The State

On Wednesday, Jharsuguda remained the coldest place in the state, recording a minimum temperature of 7.4 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, Keonjhar recorded 9.2 degrees, Balasore 11.2 degrees, and both Chandbali and Paradeep recorded 12.4 degrees Celsius.

The cold also made its impact felt in the capital, Bhubaneswar. The minimum temperature here stood at 11.4 degrees Celsius, a significant drop of 7.2 degrees compared to the previous three days. Due to the intensifying cold, the streets wore a deserted look during the morning and night hours.

Forecast: Temperatures To Dip Further

According to the Meteorological Department, night temperatures are likely to dip further by 1 to 1.5 degrees Celsius over the next three days. Cold conditions are expected to intensify in hilly and coastal regions. Additionally, dense fog has been predicted in several parts of the state, which may disrupt traffic.
