An encounter broke out between Indian Army personnel and terrorists in the Kupwara region of Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday morning. The clash occurred near the Kumkadi post close to the Line of Control (LoC).
During the ongoing operation, five Indian Army soldiers, including a Major, sustained injuries. According to defence officials, all five soldiers were evacuated from the scene. One of the injured soldiers later succumbed to his injuries. Preliminary reports suggest that one terrorist has been injured and is likely to have been killed. Multiple teams of the Indian Army have been deployed to the site to neutralise the remaining terrorists.
"Indian Army troops have foiled a Pakistani Border Action Team (BAT) attack on the Line of Control against Indian forces. The BAT team involved in the attack is suspected to have regular Pakistan Army troops including their SSG commandos who work closely with terrorist organisations: Defence sources," news agency ANI reported.
This encounter follows a similar clash on Wednesday in Kupwara, where a soldier and a terrorist were killed. The Army, in coordination with Jammu and Kashmir Police, had launched a joint operation in the Kowut area. The soldier injured in that operation later succumbed to his injuries.
Earlier, on Tuesday, an infiltration attempt by terrorists was thwarted in the Battal sector. In that incident, a soldier was injured and later died from his wounds.
On Thursday, Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi visited the Line of Control (LoC) in Kupwara district following recent gunfights in the area. During his visit, General Dwivedi reviewed the security situation, interacted with soldiers and officers stationed at the LoC, and commended their efforts in addressing security challenges.
