An undated video of a teenage girl talking about her presentation on "purdah" at her school's science exhibition has gone viral on social media. According to the youngster from Karnataka's Chamarajanagar, women who observe purdah (the practice in many Muslim countries of separating women from males or strangers) can go to heaven after death, whereas those who do not wear a burqa rot in hell.
The student displays two dolls in the video, one wearing a short dress and the other a burqa. While the other doll lies in a coffin with snakes and scorpions, the one wearing a burqa is set in a coffin with flowers.
The state education department has expressed concern over the girl's purdah remarks. The Deputy Director of Public Instruction in Chamarajanagar has directed the Block Education Officer to undertake an investigation into the occurrence and submit a report.
In the viral video, the girl can be heard saying, “A woman behind a purdah is as pure as a martyr, who sheds blood. A woman behind purdah, she is capable of any Halal work and purdah is not an obstacle, but it is a way to lead her towards Jannat."
She then goes on to say, “The biggest advantage of Purdah is that a woman doesn’t see a man and the man doesn’t see her. A woman who roams around without purdah, and the husband who doesn’t question her, are not meant to be a couple at all. Any man who permits his wife to be without the purdah is a Dayyus (wittold) and Allah doesn’t accept the prayers of such a person."
A number of social media users demanded prompt action and an inquiry into the situation by tagging the Director General of Police, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, and Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
Authorities acknowledged the incident and promised that an investigation was in progress.
