Misinformation After Operation Sindoor: A flood of misinformation has emerged from Pakistan following India’s military strikes on nine identified terrorist hideouts in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) in response to the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam. All three armed forces jointly carried out the strikes under Operation Sindoor.
Within an hour of the military operation, Pakistani media, government-affiliated sources, and social media accounts began circulating unverified information about India’s military action against Pakistan. Many of these claims have been debunked by fact-checkers.
Several claims regarding Pakistan’s retaliation against India’s operation Sindoor and Srinagar airbase being hit by Pakistan were made.
An X handle, @Fx1Jonny, posting an image of a burning flight, claimed that Pakistan shot down 2 Indian war planes. Debunking the claim, another X handle, @talhagin, a research fellow at FakeReporter, as per his X bio, clarified that the claim showcases a MIG-29 fighter jet of the Indian Air Force (IAF) that had crashed in Barmer, Rajasthan, India, and the circulated information was false.
his image is not recent nor does it show a IAF jet that was shot by Pakistan - Per reports from Septmeber 2nd, 2024, it showcases a MiG-29 fighter jet of the Indian Air Force (IAF) that had crashed in Barmer, Rajasthan, India. https://t.co/zF4n192hi2 pic.twitter.com/12DkYkJRao

The X handle @Fx1Jonny in the comment section of his post mentioned that he had confirmed the information of India’s warplane being shot down by Pakistan from Sulaiman Ahmed (@ShaykhSulaiman), a UK-based Journalist, as per his X handle.

Similar claims were widely circulated on X(formerly Twitter), particularly by the verified accounts and those with high followers. Numerous such claims with different images and videos were later identified as unrelated or old footage. Some were traced to past incidents, while others were digitally altered.
Operation Sindoor
India, on early Wednesday, launched military action at nine places, which were identified as terrorist hideouts in Pakistan and PoK, to avenge the Pahalgam terrorist attack on April 22, which killed 26 people. Those killed in the deadly attack included one foreigner, one local, and 24 tourists. Strikes were aimed exclusively at terror camps operated by Pakistan-based groups, including Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) and Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT).
The Defence Ministry described Operation Sindoor as "focused, measured and non-escalatory," which did not target Pakistani civilian or Pakistani military bases. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has announced that a press briefing on Operation Sindoor will be held on Wednesday at 10:00 AM.
