After Opposition MPs staged a sit-in protest on Monday were stopped by police during their march from Parliament House to the Election Commission headquarters. Several INDIA Bloc MPs were briefly detained and taken to Parliament Street Police Station Amid EC Protest including Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Sanjay Raut and others.

The protest was against the voter roll revision in Bihar under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.

Police erected barricades at Transport Bhawan to prevent the march from proceeding, prompting senior leaders to sit at the protest site. Samajwadi Party MP Akhilesh Yadav was seen jumping over one of the barricades.

Leaders including Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, and Sharad Pawar joined the protest. The MPs wore white caps marked with a red cross over the words 'SIR' and 'vote chori', while raising slogans and holding placards against alleged voter list manipulation.

The protest began at Parliament’s Makar Dwar, where the MPs sang the national anthem before beginning the march.

Opposition INDIA Bloc March To EC Office: Top Updates

-Rahul Gandhi slammed the Election Commission, alleging it is hiding data on voter roll manipulation and said the truth will come out. Responding to EC’s notice, he refused to sign an affidavit, demanding the data be made public instead.

- DCP Devesh Kumar Mahla stated that while the Election Commission had permitted 30 MPs, the group exceeded that number, leading to detentions. He confirmed the leaders were informed that only 30 MPs would be allowed to meet the ECI.

- Lok Sabha LoP Rahul Gandhi and others help TMC MP Mitali Bagh, who fainted during the opposition protest and the resulting detention by the police.

- Joint CP Deepak Purohit said detained INDIA bloc MPs were taken to a nearby police station as the protest had no permission. He added that police are ready to facilitate their visit to the Election Commission if requested.

On Opposition's march to Election Commission on Bihar SIR, BJP leader and Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan says, "The country can see if there is anyone who is working against the Constitution, it is led by Rahul Gandhi. SIR is not happening for the first time in the country."

Lok Sabha LoP and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi says, "The reality is that they cannot talk. The truth is in front of the country. This fight is not political. This fight is to save the Constitution. This fight is for One Man, One Vote. We want a clean, pure voters list."

-Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav jumped over a police barricade as Delhi Police stops INDIA bloc leaders marching from the Parliament to the Election Commission of India to protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR).

-Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra raises slogans as the INDIA bloc leaders march from the Parliament to the Election Commission of India to protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in poll-bound Bihar and allegations of "voter fraud" during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

-Police had made elaborate arrangements and placed barricades next to the Transport Bhawan on Parliament street to stop the protesting MPs from moving forward. The police asked the MPs not to proceed further and made announcement through a a loudspeaker, as they were prevented from moving forward to the Election Commission headquarters, a short distance from Parliament House.

-Prominent among those who participated in the march were T R Baalu (DMK), Sanjay Raut (SS-UBT), Derek O'Brien (TMC), Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Samajwadi Party's Akhilesh Yadav, as well as other MPs from opposition parties like the DMK, the RJD, Left parties.

- Election Commission should take the questions and address them said Congress MP Shashi Tharoor. He says, "For me, the issue is very simple. Rahul Gandhi has raised some serious questions; they deserve serious answers. The Election Commission not only has a responsibility to the nation, but it has a responsibility to itself that there should not be any doubts left in the minds of the public about this entire credibility of our elections. The elections matter to the whole country."

-TMC MPs Mahua Moitra and Sushmita Dev and Congress' Sanjana Jatav and Jothimani climbed the barricades at Transport Bhawan and raised slogans against the EC when they were prevented from moving forward by the police. They held posters and raised slogans, demanding a rollback of the SIR.

-A banner in front of the protesting MPs read "SIR+Vote Theft=Murder of Democracy". Another banner carried by the protesting MPs read "SIR - Loktantra Par Vaar".

-The MPs also carried "SIR par chuppi Kyu" placards along with posters alleging collusion between the EC and the government.

-Several MPs carried posters and placards alleging "vote theft", a charge made out by Rahul Gandhi but denied by the EC.

-The opposition has been protesting in both Houses of Parliament against the SIR, alleging that the EC's exercise is aimed at "disenfranchising voters" in Bihar ahead of the assembly elections due later this year. They have been demanding a discussion on the issue in both Houses.

-There has been a logjam in Parliament over the SIR in Bihar and both houses have seen frequent disruptions and insignificant legislative business has taken place ever since the Monsoon session of Parliament began on July 21.

- Barring discussions on Operation Sindoor in the two Houses, Parliament has seen little business ever since the Monsoon session began on July 21 due to repeated adjournments, mostly over the SIR issue.
