Uttarakhand government on Sunday laid out an order to prevent non-residents of the state from buying land for agriculture and horticulture in Uttarakhand. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami directed district magistrates to ensure the decision is enforced till the submission of the report of the Land Law Committee or till further orders by the government.

A high-level meeting on Land law was conducted at CM Dhami’s residence in Dehradun. He directed officials that a large-scale public hearing should be conducted and expert opinions must be sought in this regard.

Divulging the details of the meeting CM Dhami wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “Taking a high-level meeting regarding land law at the government residence, the officials were instructed that till the submission of the report of the Land Law Committee or till further orders, the District Magistrate will not consider the proposal of allowing outsiders to purchase land for agriculture and horticulture. Will not take decisions. A large-scale public hearing should be conducted by the committee formed for land law and opinions of people and experts from various fields should be taken. Garhwal and Kumaon Commissioners should also be included in a decentralized system for land law. We are always committed to working for the interests of the people of the state”.

CM Dhami has been mulling a strong land law for the welfare of the local population of Uttarakhand. Dhami constituted a committee in this regard and it submitted its report in September. The committee said the land bought for agricultural purposes in the state was being misused.
