145 MPs in Lok Sabha and 63 MPs in Rajya Sabha submitted an impeachment motion in Parliament seeking removal of Justice Yashwant Varma in connection with the cash recovered from the judge’s house.
Anurag Thakur, Ravi Shankar Prasad, LoP Rahul Gandhi, Rajiv Pratap Rudy, PP Chaudhary, Supriya Sule and KC Venugopal, along with 138 other members of Lok Sabha signed the motion submitted against Justice Varma under Articles 124, 217, and 218 of the Constitution.
For an impeachment notice to be submitted in Parliament, it should bear the signature of at least 100 Lok Sabha MPs and 50 Rajya Sabha MPs; however, it is the right of the speaker and chairman of the house to accept or reject the motion.
Joining the parties part of the INDIA bloc, the Congress leader MP K Suresh said that the party supports the attempt to remove Justice Varma.
Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Sunday said over 100 MPs have already signed a notice to bring a motion in Parliament for the removal of Justice Yashwant Varma, crossing the threshold of support required for tabling the impeachment exercise in the Lok Sabha.
Although Varma denied committing the crime, a Supreme Court-appointed in-house inquiry panel has concluded that the judge and his family had active control over the storeroom, where the cash was found, proving his misconduct serious enough to seek his removal, according to news agency PTI.
