President Droupadi Murmu will today address a joint session of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, a day after the speaker was elected by voice vote in the lower house of the Parliament. She is likely to outline the priorities of the newly elected government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This will be Prez Murmu's first address to the joint session of Parliament after the formation of the 18th Lok Sabha.

The first session of the 18th Lok Sabha began on Monday, while the 264th session of the Rajya Sabha will commence on June 27. Prime Minister Modi, along with the presiding officers of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, will welcome President Murmu at the Gaja Dwar of the Parliament House.

According to Article 87 of the Constitution, it is mandatory for the President to address the joint session of Parliament at the beginning of the session after each Lok Sabha election. The President also addresses the joint sitting of both houses at the first session of Parliament every year.

The third day of the Lok Sabha session saw the appointment of Om Birla as the Speaker for a second consecutive term. Birla become the second person to repeat as Lok Sabha speaker after completing his five-year term. Earlier former Congress leader Balram Jakhar was reelected as the speaker of the lower house.

Pro-tem Speaker Bhartruhari Mahtab announced the election results after the Opposition, which had nominated Congress MP K Suresh as their candidate, decided against demanding a vote on the motion.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, LoP Rahul Gandhi and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju accompanied Birla to the chair. Leaders from across the political parties congratulated Om Birla, seeking a fair treatment from him during the proceedings.
