The Supreme Court on Tuesday turned down Yoga Guru Ramdev’s apology in the contempt proceedings related to ‘misleading advertisements’ case. Justice Amanatullah said the court has to initiate a perjury case against Ramdev and Patanjali's Managing Director Balkrishna, Bar and Bench reported. Justice Kohli noted the documents attached to substantiate Ramdev’s claims were created later on and the case was a clear perjury.
Ramdev and Balkrishna issued an unconditional apology before the Supreme Court for not complying with the top court’s order in ‘misleading advertisements’ case, ANI reported.
Advocate representing them said the duo wanted to apologise in person and were present in the court.
Ramdev appeared before the SC in the contempt proceedings related to ‘misleading advertisements’ case. Patanjali's Managing Director Balkrishna also appeared before the top court in the case.
This came after the apex court strongly rebuked Ramdev and Balkrishna for not complying with its directions in the aforementioned case, asking that the duo should be physically present in the court during the next hearing.
Besides, a show cause notice was served to Ramdev and Acharya Balakrishnan as to why contempt of court proceedings should not be initiated against them, the Bar and Bench reported. The reply from the duo in this matter was sought within two weeks.
The SC came down heavily on Patanjali Ayurved for continuing its ardent campaign of misleading advertisements regarding medicinal cures even after assuring the court that no such statements would be made further. It also chided the Centre for not taking action against the misleading propaganda floating across the TV channels, adding that the former was sitting with ‘closed eyes’. "This is very unfortunate. The government will have to take some immediate action," the bench had said.
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) in November last year moved the SC against Patanjali Ayurved’s "false" and "misleading" campaign against them.
