Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Chief Justice Of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud's residence on the occasion of Ganesh Puja has sparked yet another controversy. Soon after PM, Modi shared a picture of him attending Puja at CJI's house, the Opposition criticised the former. The BJP, however, also hit back recalling the time when former PM Manmohan Singh hosted an Iftar party, which was also attended by then Chief Justice KG Balakrishnan.
BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla referred to PM Modi with CJI Chandrachud from Ganesh Puja and Manmohan Singh from his Iftar Party with then CJI and wrote, "Attending Ganesh puja is no crime... but if PM attends it at the house of the Chief Justice... Congress ecosystem attacks Supreme Court like Rahul Gandhi in the past."
Meanwhile, Congress responded to the BJP's tweet saying that there's a difference between party held transparently in front of the media and a private Puja at someone's house.
Sharing the same picture as Poonawalla, the Mumbai Congress unit wrote, "What they (the BJP) fail to understand is the fundamental difference between a public event like an Iftar, held transparently in front of the media and the public, and a private religious ceremony at someone's residence, conducted away from public scrutiny."
Some senior lawyers reacted sharply to PM Modi's Wednesday visit to Chandrachud's residence, expresssing concerns about the Supreme Court's independence. In a post on X, senior lawyer Indira Jaising said, "Lost all confidence in the independence of the CJI. The SCBA (Supreme Court Bar Association) must condemn this publicly displayed compromise of Independence of the CJI from the executive."
Some BJP members are attempting to justify PM Modi's visit to the CJI for Ganesh Puja by sharing a photo of former PM Manmohan Singh Ji with then CJI K.G. Balakrishnan at an Iftar party.

The Congress and other opposition parties have criticised the Prime Minister's visit to the Chief Justice's residence, with RJD leader and Rajya Sabha MP claiming it conveys an "uncomfortable message."
