Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the International Cricket Stadium in Varanasi, his parliamentary constituency, on Saturday.
He greeted the people as he reached the venue of the event in Varanasi.

Along with PM Modi, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath was also present on the occasion. Former Indian cricketers Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, and Kapil Dev, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah, and Rajeev Shukla, BCCI Vice President, were among those present.

Speaking at the event amid the public chanting “Har Har Mahadev”, PM Modi said that the stadium will be the star of the show, adding that the already existing Sigra Stadium is also being revamped to provide better opportunities to youth.

“This stadium in the city of ‘Mahadev’ will be dedicated to ‘Mahadev’ himself. The sportspersons here will benefit from the construction of an international stadium in Kashi. This stadium will become the star of the Purvanchal region,” he said.

“When sports infrastructure is built, it has a positive impact not only on nurturing young sporting talent but also augurs well for the local economy,” PM Modi added.

PM Modi also said that the “success India is witnessing in sports is evidence of the change in outlook towards sports”.

Meanwhile, CM Adityanath greeted PM Modi on the “behalf of every sports enthusiast in the state”.

“PM Modi is laying the foundation stone for International Cricket Stadium Varanasi by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in Uttar Pradesh for the first time. I welcome PM Modi on behalf of every sports enthusiast in the state,” he said.

The modern international cricket stadium will be developed on an area of more than 30 acres at a cost of about Rs 450 crore. The thematic architecture of this stadium draws inspiration from Lord Shiva, with designs developed for crescent-shaped roof covers, trident-shaped floodlights, ghat steps-based seating, and Bilvipatra-shaped metallic sheets on the facade. The stadium will have a capacity of 30,000 spectators.
