THE NEW Parliament building, which is in its final stages of construction, is likely to be inaugurated later this month by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The inauguration of the new structure can take place on May 26 on the same day when PM Modi took the oath of office nine years back in 2014. However, the date of the inauguration is not confirmed yet.
Will Monsoon Session Be Held In New Parliament
- As per the media reports, the forthcoming Monsoon session, which is scheduled to begin in July, is not likely to be held in the new building.
- There are speculations that a meeting of Speakers from Parliaments of G20 nations may take place in the new building later this year, as India has the G20 presidency for 2023, sources privy to developments said.

- The new Parliament building is part of the redevelopment of Central Vista, the nation's power corridor.
- The building has been constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 970 crore under the Tata Projects.
- The four-storey structure was built in an area of 64,500 square metres. According to the report, the new building will house 1,224 MP. It has a library, multiple committee rooms and dining rooms.
- The construction of the new triangular-shaped building started on January 15, 2021, and was to be completed by August 2022.
- The new Parliament building has three main gates, which have been named Gyan Dwar, Shakti Dwar and Karma Dwar, INAS reported citing sources said. The building will have separate entrances for MPs, VIPs and visitors, sources informed further.
- The new Parliament building will have portraits of Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Subhas Chandra Bose and also of other prime ministers of the country.
- A model of the wheel from Konark's Sun Temple and a portrait of polymath Kautilya were both installed in the structure, news agency IANS quoted sources as saying.
- The current structure has 543 Lok Sabha seats and 245 Rajya Sabha seats. As per the reports, the enlargement was carried out with the delimitation exercise slated for 2026 in mind.
