Karki Becomes First Female PM Of Nepal
Karki was administered the oath of office by President Ramchandra Paudel. Karki, who is 73 years old, has become the first female Prime Minister of Nepal. Earlier, Karki held the position of Chief Justice of Nepal.
The development comes after the ouster of Prime Minister Oli following Gen Z protests led by a ban on social media platforms, which ultimately turned into widespread demonstrations against corruption, unemployment, and a huge lifestyle disparity between the rich and the poor.
Earlier, on Friday, Nepal’s Parliament was formally dissolved, and fresh elections are scheduled for March 5, 2026. The announcement came hours after Shushila Karki assumed office as the interim Prime Minister of Nepal.
Nepal Forms 6-Month Long Temporary Government
The President's office said that the dissolution was approved in the first cabinet meeting convened by Karki at 11 pm. With Karki assuming the charge of PM, the journey of Nepal’s 6-month temporary government begins.
Soon after her oath ceremony, the Ministry of External Affairs of India also issued a statement, welcoming the formation of the interim government in Nepal. In its response, the MEA said India 'will continue to work closely with Nepal for the well-being and prosperity of our two peoples and countries.'
“As a close neighbour, a fellow democracy and a long-term development partner, India will continue to work closely with Nepal for the well-being and prosperity of our two peoples and countries,” it said.
