Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday criticized the Congress over Sonia Gandhi's "poor thing" remark about President Droupadi Murmu’s speech at the joint sitting of Parliament. PM Modi called her remark an insult to 10 crore tribals across the country.
During an election rally in Delhi’s Dwarka, PM Modi accused the Congress leadership of showing arrogance and disrespect towards President Murmu. "Droupadi Murmu ji has come here from a tribal family. Her mother tongue is not Hindi, it is Odia. She inspired the Parliament today in a wonderful way, and gave a speech. But the royal family of Congress has started insulting her,” PM Modi was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

“A member of the royal family said that the tribal daughter gave a boring speech. Another member went one step further and called the President a poor thing. They find the speech of a tribal daughter boring. This is an insult to the 10 crore tribal brothers and sisters of the country. This is an insult to every poor person in the country...They like abusing people, defaming India in foreign countries and talking about urban Naxals. Delhi has to be very cautious. Out of fear of losing, these two egoists have joined hands,” he further added.

PM Modi’s reaction came after former Congress president Sonia Gandhi stirred controversy on the first day of the budget session of Parliament. “The President was getting very tired during her speech, she could hardly speak, poor thing,” she said.
The BJP rebuked the Congress following Sonia Gandhi's comments, labeling them as "deeply disrespectful." They also highlighted the opposition's ongoing "disregard" for the President.
Taking to X, formerly Twitter, BJP IT Cell chief Amit Malviya said, "Sonia Gandhi referring to the President as a 'poor thing' demeans the high office and reflects her feudal mindset. This is not the first time the Congress has ridiculed the first tribal woman to hold the highest constitutional office in the country.”
Amid huge backlash, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi defended her mother and said Sonia Gandhi has the utmost respect for the President and added that her mother’s remarks have been twisted.
"My mother is a 78-year-old lady. She simply said that 'the President must have been tired reading such a long speech, poor thing'. She fully respects her, in fact, she has the utmost respect for her. It is very unfortunate that this kind of thing is twisted by the media," Gandhi told reporters.
