Following the Supreme Court's intervention, a pregnant woman, Sunali Khatun (25) returned to India with his eight-year-old son after they were deported to Bangladesh in June this year over suspicion of being an illegal immigrant.

Khatun and her son entered India from the Mehadipur border outpost in West Bengal's Malda district. The development took place after a flag meeting between the BSF and the Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB).

Sunali, along with her husband, Danish Sheikh, and their son, were picked up by the Delhi Police from a colony. Three others, including one Sweety Bibi and her two children, were also picked up.

On June 26, after almost a week of detention, they were all sent to Bangladesh. While Sunali and her son have come to India, Danish, Sweety, and her two children still remain in Bangladesh as the Central government has contested their Indian citizenship.

Sunali and her son returned only after the centre allowed it on humanitarian grounds. Both Sunali and Sweety's families were arrested on August 21 in Bangladesh under the Passport Act and Foreigners Act.

They got bail from a local court on December 1, after which they had been living with a relative, Faruk Sheikh. On Monday, the Supreme Court asked the Centre to consider allowing Sunali and her child to enter India on "humanitarian grounds" while keeping her under "surveillance".

A bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice JoymalyaBagchi asked Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to seek instructions on permission for the woman, who is in the advanced stage of pregnancy.

"Give us two days' time to seek instructions on the issue. We understand the court is asking us to consider the case on humanitarian grounds. We will look into it," Mehta said while urging the court for some time. Later, the permission was granted by the Centre.
