Pune Building Collapse: A portion of an under-construction building at a waste-to-energy project site collapsed on Wednesday afternoon in Pune’s Pimpri-Chinchwad, trapping 16 workers under the debris. A rescue operation is currently underway.
According to a senior official, cited by news agency PTI, a huge mound of garbage crashed onto the three-storey building, causing it to collapse, following heavy rains. "The administrative building was situated next to a mountain-like pile of legacy waste. Prima facie, it appears that due to heavy rains, the waste mound became loose and collapsed on top of the building," said Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation Commissioner Vijay Suryawanshi.
The entire project is being developed by the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) in the Moshi area under a public-private partnership (PPP) model.
Relief Teams On The Spot
Upon receiving news of the accident, fire brigades, local police, and disaster management teams immediately arrived at the scene. Emergency teams are working tirelessly to remove the debris and safely rescue those trapped underneath.
Senior officials from the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation have also arrived at the scene and are personally overseeing the rescue efforts. Several ambulances have been placed on standby to quickly transport the injured to nearby hospitals.
