Pune News: Two engineering students were killed while their friend was injured after a speeding truck hit the bike they were riding from behind in the Chandan Nagar area on the Pune-Ahmednagar road on Monday night, police said today. The driver of the truck, after hitting the bike, did not stop and tried to run away but was caught some distance away and arrested, they added.

“The incident took place at around 10:30 pm on Monday in Chandan Nagar area on Pune-Ahmednagar road when three students, in their early 20s and studying at an engineering college, were on their way to the Pune railway station,” the police said.

Two of them were to go to their hometown Latur in Maharashtra.

"While they were on their way, the truck hit their motorbike from the back. A youth died on the spot, while another succumbed to injuries in a hospital," Vimaltal police station's inspector Anand Khobre informed.

"After the accident, the truck driver did not stop and tried to escape, but was stopped by police and locals about 300 metres away," the official added.

The truck driver was arrested and charged under Indian Penal Code (IPC) section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and other relevant sections, the police said, adding that an investigation was on into the case.

In a recent incident, a 17-year-old boy, the son of a prominent Pune-based real estate developer, fatally knocked down two motorbike-riding software engineers in Kalyani Nagar, Pune, in the early hours of May 19.

The crash has ignited widespread national outrage, particularly due to the swift granting of bail to the teenager within just 15 hours. Many have criticised the conditions of his release as inadequate. A 17-year-old boy was granted bail on a surety of Rs 7,500 and an assurance from his grandfather to keep him away from bad company.
