Punjab Floods: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday called CM Bhgwant Mann, soon after landing in India. He discussed the situation arising due to rain and flooding in the state and assured all help and support, as per the sources quoted by news agency PTI.
Punjab is reeling under one of the worst floods in recent decades, with 29 people losing their lives and more than 2.56 lakh residents affected across 12 districts. Officials said Pathankot district has reported the highest number of deaths, while large-scale evacuations are continuing in the worst-hit areas.
Punjab Floods Update: 12 Districts Under Flood Impact
According to the state government’s bulletin issued on Monday, the floods have affected 1,044 villages between August 1 and September 1. Gurdaspur has been the worst hit with 321 villages inundated, followed by Kapurthala (115), Hoshiarpur (94) and Amritsar (88).
The heavy flooding has been triggered by swollen Sutlej, Beas and Ravi rivers, along with seasonal rivulets carrying excess rainwater from catchment areas in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. Continuous rainfall in Punjab further worsened the situation.
Punjab Floods: Deaths And Missing Persons
Of the 29 deaths, Pathankot reported six fatalities. Amritsar, Barnala, Hoshiarpur, Ludhiana, Mansa and Rupnagar recorded three deaths each, while Bathinda, Gurdaspur, Patiala, Mohali and Sangrur reported one each. Three people are still missing in Pathankot district.
Punjab Floods Update: Evacuations And relief camps
So far, 15,688 people have been rescued from flood-hit regions. The highest evacuations were reported in Gurdaspur (5,549), followed by Ferozepur (3,321), Fazilka (2,049) and Pathankot (1,139). Amritsar, Hoshiarpur and Kapurthala also saw large-scale evacuations.
Authorities have set up 129 relief camps to shelter affected families. Gurdaspur has opened 25 camps, Patiala and Hoshiarpur 20 each and Pathankot 14. These camps are providing food, medicines and essential supplies to thousands of displaced residents.
Punjab Floods Update: Villages And Farmland Affected
The bulletin said 2,56,107 people have been impacted by floods across the state. Amritsar has reported the highest number at 35,000, followed by Ferozepur (24,015), Fazilka (21,562), and Pathankot (15,053).
Floodwaters have also damaged farmland. More than 96,000 hectares of agricultural land have been affected, with losses to crops expected to be significant. Officials said livestock deaths have been reported in several villages, though final figures will be available once waters recede.

Rescue Operations In Full Swing
Relief and rescue work is being carried out by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), the Army and Punjab Police. Twenty NDRF teams have been deployed in Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Ferozepur, Fazilka and Bathinda.
State authorities said monitoring and control cells are tracking river levels round the clock. The government has described the situation as one of the most serious flood disasters Punjab has seen in decades.
