At least two school teachers, who were married to each other, died on Sunday morning after their car plunged into a canal in Punjab’s Moga district due to dense fog that severely reduced road visibility. Both the husband and wife died on the spot.

The accident occurred when Jas Karan Singh was driving his wife, Kamaljeet Kaur, to her election duty at a polling booth in Sangatpura village for the Punjab zila parishad polls. Heavy fog reportedly obscured the road ahead, causing the car to lose control and fall into a canal running alongside the road.

Kamaljeet Kaur was posted on election duty at the Sangatpura polling booth, while Jas Karan Singh, an English teacher originally from Mansa district, was accompanying her. Both were government school teachers serving in Moga district.

Driving in fog demands extra caution, as dense conditions significantly reduce visibility and make it hard to spot vehicles and road hazards ahead. Reducing speed and maintaining a safe distance are crucial to preventing accidents. 

Fog And Weather Alert In Punjab

Punjab is currently in the grip of a severe cold wave, with dense fog enveloping large parts of the state on Sunday morning. Several districts remained covered in thick mist, leading to poor visibility and a further drop in temperatures. The maximum temperature across Punjab declined by 1.8 degrees Celsius, with Amritsar and Ludhiana recording below-normal temperatures.

The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for dense fog in parts of 13 districts on Sunday and Monday. The districts under alert are Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, Fatehgarh Sahib, Rupnagar, Patiala, Mohali, Tarn Taran, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, and Ludhiana.

According to the department, there is no likelihood of rainfall at present, and dry weather is expected to persist across Punjab for the next six days. Meanwhile, the minimum temperature in the state has risen by 2 degrees Celsius and is now 2.8 degrees above normal. Ludhiana recorded the lowest minimum temperature at 7.4 degrees Celsius.

Temperature Recorded In Punjab Cities  

Faridkot reported the highest maximum temperature in the state at 25.6 degrees Celsius. Maximum temperatures in other cities included Amritsar at 18.4 degrees Celsius (2.3 degrees below normal), Ludhiana at 20.0 degrees Celsius (1.6 degrees below normal), Patiala at 21.5 degrees Celsius, Pathankot at 20.5 degrees Celsius, Bathinda at 23.9 degrees Celsius, Gurdaspur at 20.0 degrees Celsius, and SBS Nagar at 20.7 degrees Celsius.

Minimum temperatures were recorded at 9.5 degrees Celsius in Amritsar, 8.8 degrees Celsius in Patiala, 8.9 degrees Celsius in Pathankot, 8.4 degrees Celsius in Bathinda, 8.9 degrees Celsius in Hoshiarpur, and 7.5 degrees Celsius in Gurdaspur.
