Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha (LoP) triggered a row on Sunday after he launched a scathing attack on the BJP saying that that Hinduism is not about spreading fear, hatred and falsehoods.

"All our great men have spoken about non-violence and finishing fear. But, those who call themselves Hindu only talk about violence, hatred, untruth. Aap Hindu ho hi nahi" (You Are Not A Hindu), said Rahul Gandhi while addressing the House during a discussion on the Motion of Thanks. During his speech, Rahul Gandhi also showed a picture of Lord Shiva, after which Speaker Om Birla reminded him that he was not allowed to display the placards in the House.

"BJP and RSS do not represent all the Hindus…We are also Hindus," Gandhi said.

As Gandhi continued speaking, Prime Minister Narendra Modi intervened and said that calling the entire Hindu community violent is not right. "Calling the entire Hindu community violent is a very serious matter," the prime minister said.

BJP Holds Protest For Rahul Gandhi's Remarks

The BJP on Monday protested inside and outside the Parliament after Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi said in the Lok Sabha that members of the ruling party are not Hindus as they promote division and violence.

In a post on X, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said Gandhi insulted "crores of Hindus" by saying that Hindus commit violence, lie and spread hatred. "He should apologise for this," he said.

Union Health Minister and BJP president JP Nadda also lambasted Gandhi, accusing him of combining lies and hatred in his speech. It was a worst show by Gandhi on his first day, he said.

"Third Time Fail LoP has a knack for agitated, flawed logic. His speech today has shown that neither has he understood the mandate of 2024 (his third successive loss) nor does he have any humility," he said in a post on X.

Union Minister G Kishan Reddy also slammed Gandhi and said democracy will remain intact and there will also be peace “so long as Hindus are in majority" in the country.

Priyanka Gandhi Backs Brother Rahul

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Monday said her brother did not insult Hindus, but was talking about the saffron party and its leaders.

"He cannot insult Hindus. He said it very clearly. He talked about the BJP, he talked about BJP leaders," Priyanka Gandhi said while leaving the Parliament building along with her mother Sonia Gandhi.

Congress MP KC Venugopal reacted to Rahul Gandhi's remark and said, "Today in the entire speech, Rahul highlighted Lord Shiva. He told who the real Hindu is, but BJP-sponsored Hindu is different. They will use Hindus only for polarization in elections, they will use Hindus only to win elections. Rahul's speech was very clear, he told very clearly they want to distort it."
