A shocking allegation of a baby swap has thrown Mahatma Gandhi Government Hospital in Udaipur district, Rajasthan, into turmoil, leaving two families locked in a bitter dispute over their newborns. The controversy erupted after two deliveries on October 21, spiraling to the point where police had to step in to maintain order.
DNA samples from both sets of parents have been sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory in Jaipur, with results expected within 15 days. Meanwhile, the hospital has set up an investigation committee, but tensions among the families remain high.
The incident took place on the afternoon of October 21 when Anita Rawat from Udaipur and Rameshwari Soni from Chittorgarh gave birth in the same operation theatre, just 43 minutes apart. Anita reportedly delivered a healthy boy, while Rameshwari had a girl.
According to News18, confusion arose due to alleged negligence by hospital staff. Anita’s husband, Sunil Rawat, said, “We were first given a baby boy for an hour, but later the staff claimed it was a mistake and handed us a girl instead. We protested, but they didn’t listen."
Following the mix-up, Sunil filed a complaint at the Hathi Pol police station. Police then placed both babies in the hospital ICU on Wednesday, ensuring they were fed milk from the milk bank.
Sunil, visibly emotional, added, “We didn’t want the babies to be deprived of their mother’s milk, so we accepted the girl. We’ll stay in the hospital until the DNA report arrives. But if it confirms the boy is ours, it will be very painful for us, we’ve breastfed the girl and grown emotionally attached to her."

On the other hand, Rameshwari Soni’s family is claiming the boy, alleging that the hospital intentionally swapped the babies because the girl was considered ‘unwanted’.
An officer from Hathi Pol police station confirmed that forensic experts had collected samples from the parents of both families. “We are investigating the matter, and if the swap is confirmed, strict action will be taken against the staff. For now, both infants are safe," the officer said.
Dr. RL Suman, superintendent of MB Hospital, stated on Thursday that after a detailed investigation, the identity of each newborn and their mother had been confirmed, with the parents’ agreement. However, both families have rejected this claim.
Dr. Suman also confirmed that the hospital has formed an internal investigation committee to review its procedures. Meanwhile, both families are anxiously awaiting the DNA report, which could finally resolve the heart-wrenching dispute.
