Karnataka News: Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara has publicly apologised following a widespread criticism over his comments regarding a recent sexual assault incident in Bengaluru’s BTM Layout.

Addressing reporters on Tuesday, Parameshwara clarified, “Statement I made yesterday wasn’t understood properly. I am someone who has always had a lot of concern for the safety of women. I have ensured Nirbhaya funds are utilised well for their protection. I don’t want my statement to be twisted. If any women have been hurt by this, I express my regret and apologise,”

His clarification comes after backlash over his earlier comment, where he said, “Incidents like these tend to happen here and there in a big city like this. Whatever legal action needs to be taken will be done in accordance with the law. I have also instructed our commissioner to increase beat patrolling.” The remark was widely criticised as insensitive, especially as the assault was captured on CCTV and sparked public outrage.

The minister’s remarks drew significant criticism online, with many describing them as ‘insensitive’ and ‘tone-deaf’ given the seriousness of the crime.

The assault occurred in the early hours of April 3, when CCTV footage showed two women walking through a narrow alley at around 1.52 am. An unidentified man approached them, cornered one of the women, and groped her before fleeing. The visibly shaken women were seen leaving the area shortly after the attack.

In response to the public outcry, Parameshwara has directed Bengaluru police to enhance beat patrolling, particularly during late hours, to ensure the safety of women in the city.

Police Step Up Probe, Scan Over 300 CCTV Footages

Following criticism over the minister’s comments, Bengaluru police have ramped up efforts to catch the accused. Police Commissioner B Dayananda said multiple teams are working on the case, and more than 300 CCTV footages are being analysed. The investigation is being headed by the DCP South-East, and the suspect is being traced based on visuals from several cameras. The police have also strengthened day and night beat systems, with senior officers monitoring patrols using software. Parameshwara’s remark was also slammed by the opposition BJP, which called it irresponsible. The minister later expressed regret, stating he firmly supports women’s safety.
