The Bandra courtroom witnessed unexpected drama on Sunday as two lawyers jostled to represent Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, the Bangladeshi man accused of attacking Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan. The heated dispute briefly overshadowed the seriousness of the remand proceedings, prompting the magistrate to step in as a referee.
The commotion began when one lawyer approached Shehzad to secure his signature on a vakalatnama (legal authorisation document). Before the process could be completed, another lawyer hurriedly intervened, obtaining Shehzad’s signature first. The resulting confusion left the court momentarily in disarray.
To resolve the matter, the magistrate proposed that both lawyers represent the accused jointly, a suggestion they reluctantly accepted, allowing the proceedings to resume.

Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad was arrested early Sunday morning from Thane city after a police investigation linked him to the January 16 attack on Saif Ali Khan. He allegedly broke into Khan’s 12th-floor apartment in Bandra’s upscale 'Satguru Sharan' building with the intent to steal but ended up stabbing the actor multiple times when confronted.
Amid heavy police security, the accused was presented in court, where he denied having any complaints against the authorities. The magistrate subsequently remanded him in police custody for five days.
The police investigation involved analysing CCTV footage from Khan’s building and detaining several individuals resembling Shehzad. The accused, who hails from Jhalokathi district in Bangladesh, had been in Mumbai for five months, working petty jobs, including at a housekeeping agency.
Meanwhile, Saif Ali Khan underwent emergency surgery at Lilavati Hospital following the 2:30 am attack. Doctors have confirmed his recovery is progressing and he is expected to be discharged soon.
