Samrat Choudhary News: Bihar politics is set to witness a new chapter of polity as the Bharatiya Janata Party is going to have its first chief minister in the state. State Deputy Chief Minister and the BJP leader, Samrat Choudhary, was picked for the CM post on Tuesday.

The BJP, the single largest party in the 243-member assembly with 89 MLAs, elected Choudhary as its legislature party leader soon after Bihar CM Nitish Kumar submitted his resignation to Governor Syed Ata Hasnain, ending his over 20-year-long tenure. Nitish became a Rajya Sabha MP last week.

Now, Choudhary, BJP MLA from Tarapur, is set to be the next CM of Bihar after his election as the NDA legislature party. Nitish, JD-U chief, who has been the axis of the state politics over the last two decades, happily left the chief minister post for his deputy, leaving many in shock.

Nitish is often called "Paltu Ram" (turncoat) by his critics due to his frequent switching of alliances between the NDA and the Mahagathbandhan to remain in power. Surprisingly, the same Nitish left the top job for Samrat Choudhary.

Samrat's Dethroning Nitish Vow

Many would not know that just a few years ago, Nitish was the archenemy of Samrat. Their political acrimony was so deep that Choudhary had vowed to wear a turban until Nitish as chief minister of the Mahagathbandhan in 2022, is removed. The BJP leader had started sporting a turban after Nitish jumped ship to the Mahagathbandhan after ditching the BJP-led NDA. He had vowed that he would take off his turban only after "dethroning" Nitish Kumar.

However, the pledge lasted only for 22 months and saw a dramatic end without the removal of CM Nitish. The vow was compromised after Nitish returned to the NDA fold and Samrat became his deputy in the cabinet.

On July 3, 2024, Choudhary took off his turban in Ayodhya and placed it in the Lord Ram Temple, claiming the fulfilment of a vow regarding Nitish. He took a dip in the Saryu River here and dedicated his turban in the Ram Temple after shaving off his head.

What Choudhary Said After Removing His Turban

Choudhary said his resolution was fulfilled in January after Nitish Kumar resigned as the chief minister of the RJD-JD(U)-Congress grouping and joined the BJP-led NDA to become CM. "Our commitment was to remove Nitish Kumar from the post of chief minister. So, on the completion of this commitment, I have removed my turban," Chaudhary had said.

"My resolution was fulfilled on January 28 as Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar moved away from the INDIA bloc and joined us and became our chief minister. I had taken a resolution that I will not remove my turban until Nitish Kumar's removal as Bihar chief minister. With him in NDA, my resolution is complete," he added.
