Tensions flared in Sandeshkhali’s Jelliakhali area in North 24 Parganas district following violent clashes between supporters of the BJP and Trinamool Congress (TMC). At least 10 party workers from both sides were injured in the confrontation, with eight requiring hospitalisation due to serious injuries.

According to Sandeshkhali-2 Block Trinamool President Dilip Mallick, the conflict began when BJP workers were seen speaking to the Imam of the local mosque. As some Trinamool members approached and inquired about the conversation, BJP supporters allegedly attacked them, injuring six Trinamool workers, a Jagran.com report stated.

Mallick further alleged that BJP members opened fire during the scuffle, a claim the BJP strongly refuted. Sukalyan Vaidya, BJP’s Basirhat Organisational District President, countered that the violence began when Trinamool workers tried to force BJP supporters to join a protest march against the Waqf Amendment Act. According to him, BJP workers refused, prompting a physical attack by Trinamool supporters.

Sandeshkhali police station OC Balya Ghosh stated that the arrested individuals are currently being interrogated, the report stated.

In a separate incident on Saturday, fresh political unrest broke out in West Bengal’s Dakshin Dinajpur. BJP supporters, led by Union Minister and West Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar, clashed with police during a protest over the recent violence in Murshidabad.

Police stated that mild force was used to disperse the crowd when protesters attempted to storm the Block Development Officer’s office. However, Majumdar claimed that the confrontation resulted from an unprovoked lathi charge by police on BJP workers.
