The apex religious body of Sikhs, SGPG, amid the current India-Canada fiasco, asked the government to take the matter ‘seriously’ as it was going to ‘affect’ the Sikhs across the world. SGPC chief Harjinder Singh Dhami on Tuesday appealed to the Centre to address the apprehensions of the Sikhs and reach a meaningful solution over it, as reported by news agency PTI.

Amid the pandemonium, that erupted over Hardeep Singh Nijjar’s killing in Canada, Justin Trudeau chided India alleging that the the latter was involved in the incident. After laying out allegations, Canada suspended a senior diplomat of India. As a reaction to this, India also expelled a Canadian diplomatic officer, besides rejecting the allegations as ‘absurd’ and ‘motivated’. Dhami, while highlighting the issue, further said the two nations should bring this matter to the agenda rather than levelling accusations at each other. He said human rights and religious concerns of the Sikhs living globally are important.
Dhami also recalled 1984 anti-Sikh riots saying the community had gone through painful times.
Notably, Khalistan Tiger Force chief Hardeep Singh Nijjar was killed on June 18 this year after being shot by unidentified assailants in Surrey, Canada. He was also the head of the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara Sahib. Nijjar was India’s one of the most-wanted terrorists and the National Investigation Agency (NIA) declared a cash reward of Rs 10 lakh on him.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, while addressing the parliament, said their agencies were actively perusing ‘credible allegations’ of potential links between agents of the government of India in the killing of a Canadian citizen (referring to the murder of Khalistani leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar).

Both governments also issued advisories for their citizens staying/travelling in the countries to exercise caution.
