Sikkim on Wednesday faced large-scale devastation after a cloudburst over the South Lhonak Lake in North West Sikkim triggered flash floods in the northeastern state. The Teesta River overflowed and swept through several areas of Sikkim in the morning. So far, five people in the state have lost their lives to the flash floods, while 43 including 23 Army personnel remain missing since the flood hit the hill state.
However, in a relief to the people of Sikkim, the Central Water Commission (CWC) said that the water level at three stations – Melli, Singtam and Rohtak – on the Teesta is below the danger mark but hovering near it.
Here Are The Top Developments On Sikkim Flash Floods
-The current water level at station Singtam is 351.31 metres while the danger level is at 355.09 metres. "Water Level is below the warning level. So, there is no flood situation around Singtam. Currently, no flood forecast is available for this location," the CWC said.
-The flash floods in the Teesta River basin were aggravated by the release of water from a dam, officials said.

- Assuring all possible support, Prime Minister Modi on Wednsday posted, "Spoke to Sikkim CM Shri @PSTamangGolay and took stock of the situation in the wake of the unfortunate natural calamity in parts of the state. Assured all possible support in addressing the challenge. I pray for the safety and well-being of all those affected."
-Around 3,000-4,000 people were evacuated last night in and around Rangpo and 5 relief camps were also opened in the district, an official said.
-Informing the number of deaths in the flash flood, a Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority official said, "Three bodies have been recovered from Singtam during rescue and relief efforts."
-All schools located in the four districts of Sikkim will remain closed till October 8, the education department said in a circular.
-According to Defence officials, the Border Road Organisation (BRO) has already launched rescue operations and 80 locals have been safely evacuated so far.
-A 120 metre-long cable steel suspension bridge at Singtam also known as the Indreni bridge has been completely washed away by Teesta river water early on Wednesday.
-Sikkim Chief Minister PS Tamang visited the Singtam area to take stock of the situation and also held a meeting with senior officials at the Singtam Nagar Panchayat office asking them to keep vigil.
-"I want to assure you that the government is fully committed to providing all necessary assistance and relief to those in need. We understand the magnitude of the situation and are mobilizing all available resources to ensure the safety and well-being of our citizens. Our dedicated teams are working day and night to address the immediate concerns and challenges posed by this calamity," the Sikkim CM said.
