Sikkim Floods: At least 14 people have been reported dead in the flash floods that hit Sikkim in the early hours of Wednesday, while 102 people are still missing, said a state government data. More than 3,000 tourists are feared to be stranded in different parts of the State.

Most of the people who have been injured and went missing have been reported from Chungthang in Mangan district, and Dikchu, Singtam in Gangtok district, and Rangpo in Pakyong district. Nearly 12-14 workers working in the Teesta Stage 3 dam in Chungthang are still stranded in the tunnels of the dam.

Let's take a look at the key updates in the case:

- In the wake of the situation, the State government has asked for three (3) extra platoons of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), which the Central government has approved. At present, one platoon of NDRF is already in service in Rangpo and Singtam towns.

- The State government has set up 18 relief camps in Singtam, Rangpo, Dikchu and Adarsh Gaon which have faced most of the damages. However, due to a lack of connectivity with Chungthang, the relief camps there are being set up by the Indian Army and other paramilitaries.

- The cloudburst in North Sikkim and subsequent release of water resulted in an outburst in Lake Lhonak and a major breach in Chungthang dam. As more than 8000 cubic metres per second of water has been released from the Teesta barrage, the downstream districts of Kalimpong, Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri and Cooch Behar are facing flood-like situation.

- The National Highway-10 connecting Gangtok to Siliguri has been completely washed away near the Likhuvir-Setijhora stretch. Immediate repairs on a war footing will be taken as and when the water recedes in Teesta.
