Sonam Raghuvanshi, accused of killing her husband Raja during their honeymoon in Meghalaya, had allegedly planned to stage the act as a robbery gone wrong, as per a report by The Indian Express based on the investigators' account.
The report claims that she had planned to live as a widow for some time before trying to convince her family to marry her to her alleged boyfriend Raj Kushwaha, a suspected mastermind of the plot arrested by the police.
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed to probe Raja Raghuvanshi's murder grew suspicious of her after hearing her audio call to her mother-in-law in which she claimed that she was fasting for her husband's health.
The SIT found it to be a lie as she had eaten at the hotel. Upon this, the SIT mounted tactical surveillance on Sonam, which revealed her being in constant touch with Kushwaha, the police said.
The Indian Express quoted East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem saying, "We found that she had consumed food. We also found that she was in touch with the main accused, Raj Kushwaha. The plan was to pass this off as a robbery gone wrong".
The case made headlines after the newlywed Indore couple, Sonam and Raja, went missing while on their honeymoon on May 23. The case gained political attention as MP CM Mohan Yadav reached out to Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma seeking assistance.
On June 2, Raja's body was found in the nearby area of the homestay where they spent the night before leaving early morning.
On Monday at around 3:00 am, Sonam reached Kashi Dhaba on Varanasi-Ghazipur road in Uttar Pradesh, some 1,200 km from the crime scene. She asked the Dhaba owner to make a call to her family, after which, the Ghazipur Police arrested her. She had reportedly surrendered to the police.
In the overnight raids, the police arrested Kushwaha ad four others who were allegedly involved with her in killing Raja.
