Scientist-activist Sonam Wangchuk on Friday ended his 26-day hunger strike after Union Minister JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh met him at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram. During the meeting, Nadda and Singh shared the government's assurances on their demands. The 59-year-old scientist turned activist ended his fast after midnight in the presence of two Union Ministers, his wife Gitanjali Angmo, and a few other leaders in the hospital. Nadda assured Activist Wangchuk that the government will take necessary steps to address the concern of the protestors.
What Are The Assurances?
Meeting Wangchuk, Nadda claimed that the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government will not register cases against the protestors who participated in Delhi's Jantar Mantar protest and the Parliament March that occurred on July 20. “The government is positive on not registering cases against those protesting peacefully at Jantar Mantar in Delhi and those participating in the march to the Parliament on July 20, 2026," Nadda said while reading out the assurances.
Secondly, Nadda assured that the Narendra Modi-led government will hold a detailed discussion on the paper leak in the Indian Parliament, providing needful solutions and educational reforms related to examinations.
Thirdly, Nadda said the government is also considering providing suitable compensation for the families of students who died by suicide due to the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak.
“The government has already assured threadbare discussions to find solutions to paper leaks and educational reforms for exams in the parliament. Besides, the government is also positively considering suitable compensation for the suicide victims of recent NEET paper leaks," he said.
The CJP Protest
The protest comes days after the youth-led party founded by Abhijeet Dipke has been demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradesh over the alleged irregularities linked to the NEET UG 2026 paper leak. Wangchuk had started his indefinite hunger strike on June 28 at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar in solidarity with students protesting over the alleged NEET paper leak.
