The Special Session of Parliament is all set to begin today, September 18. The session will witness a discussion on Parliament's 75-year journey, starting from the Samvidhan Sabha that first met on December 9, 1946. A discussion on 'Parliamentary Journey of 75 years starting from Samvidhan Sabha – Achievements, Experiences, Memories and Learnings' will be held in Parliament on the first day of the five-sitting long special session, a parliamentary bulletin said on Wednesday.
Eight important bills are also listed to be discussed during this five-day session including a discussion on a controversial bill on the Chief Election Commissioner pick and the long-pending Women Reservation Bill.
Ahead of the session, let's take a look at what is expected from it:
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to open the discussion on 75 years of parliament in Loka Sabha on the first day, Monday. Meanwhile, BJP leader Piyush Goyal will be opening the discussion in Rajya Saha.
- A day ahead of the week-long special session of Parliament, the Congress party raised their demand for a greater reservation for women in legislative roles.
- As many as four bills including a Bill to regulate the appointment, conditions of service, and term of office of the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners are part of the legislative business of the government for the session.
- Several other bills including 'The Advocates (Amendment) Bill, 2023' and 'The Press and Registration of Periodicals Bill, 2023', which were already passed by Rajya Sabha on August 3, 2023, will also be taken up in the Parliament's session.
- 'The Post Office Bill, 2023' has also been listed in the Lok Sabha business. The bill was earlier introduced in Rajya Sabha on August 10, 2023 and it repeals the Indian Post Office Act, 1898.
- An all-party meeting was also held on Sunday in Delhi with various political parties demanding the passage of the women's reservation bill in the upcoming session.
- The Women's Reservation Bill seeks to reserve 33 per cent of seats in the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies for women. Despite being a crucial step towards gender parity and inclusive governance, the Bill has remained in legislative limbo for far too long.
- Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leader Ram Mohan Naidu on Sunday said he put forward the demand for a 'special category' status for Andhra Pradesh at the all-party meeting.
- Earlier on Sunday, Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar hoisted the national flag at the new Parliament building a day before the commencement of the Special Session of Parliament.
- Union Minister Rajnath Singh and several leaders of opposition parties arrived to attend the all-party meeting in the national capital.
