Cough Syrup Deaths: The licence issued to Sresan Pharmaceuticals for manufacturing the cough syrup Coldrif was completely revoked by the Tamil Nadu government on Monday. The firm has also been shut down. Coldrif is linked to the deaths of 23 children in Madhya Pradesh and three in Rajasthan.

“The license to manufacture has been entirely cancelled and the firm has been closed down,” said a statement from the state’s health department.

Meanwhile, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday conducted searches at locations connected to Sresan Pharmaceuticals, as well as at the homes of senior officials from the Tamil Nadu Food and Drug Administration (FDA), according to PTI sources.

As part of its money laundering probe under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), the ED covered at least seven sites in Chennai. The raids also included the residences of high-ranking officials from Tamil Nadu’s drug regulatory department.

On October 10, a Parasia court sent Sresan Pharma owner S Ranganathan to 10-day police custody in connection with the deaths of children allegedly caused by the consumption of Coldrif cough syrup.

The Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) has issued a directive to all States and Union Territories, calling for strict compliance with the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules, 1945, for the testing of raw materials and finished pharmaceutical formulations.
