The Supreme Court was informed by the Centre that it has asked an NCERT commission to review the textbooks of all classes. Following this, the top court directed the Centre to form an expert committee instead and carry out a review of the NCERT curriculum. Supreme Court's directive comes amid the recent backlash and removal of a chapter on 'corruption in judiciary' in class 8 NCERT textbook.

On Wednesday, a suo motu case on NCERT’s Class 8 social science textbook was being heard by a bench of Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M Pancholi.

“We have started systemic changes," Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the bench, adding that domain experts would examine the curriculum.

Earlier on Tuesday, NCERT had extended an unconditional public apology over the publication of the book, which contained a controversial chapter.

The apology published in newspapers read, "The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has recently published a social science textbook 'Exploring Society: India and Beyond' Grade 8 (Part-II) which contained Chapter IV titled 'The Role of Judiciary in our Society'. The Director and Members of NCERT hereby tender an unconditional and unqualified apology for the said Chapter IV. The entire book has been withdrawn and is not available."

The controversy erupted over a chapter in the class 8 social science book, titled ‘Exploring Society: India and Beyond’, drawing sharp reaction from the Supreme Court. The Chief Justice of India, Surya Kant had said, "I will not allow anyone on earth to taint the integrity of the institution and defame the institution. At any cost, I will not permit it. Whosoever high it may be, the law will take its course. I know how to deal with it.”
