Stray Dog Case Hearing: The Supreme Court of India, on Friday, ordered that stray dogs should be removed from educational institutions, hospitals, bus stands, sports complexes, and railway stations, directing that they should be sent to shelters.

Taking note of the 'alarming rise' in dog-bite incidents across the country, the top court ordered that public institutions should be properly fenced to prevent the entry of stray dogs.

Shift Strays To Shelters: Apex Court

A bench of justices Vikram Nath, Sandeep Mehta and NV Anjaria held that the local authority should remove stray dogs from public institutions like bus stands, railway stations, hospitals etc and shift them to shelters after vaccination and sterilisation, as per the Animal Birth Control Rules, 2023.

The bench, which is hearing a stray dog bite incidents through suo motu, observed that strays should not be released to the same places where they were picked up from.

"All national highways will have helpline numbers for reporting stray cattle. The chief secretaries of all states will ensure strict compliance with these directives," it said.

Stray Dog Case Hearing: Top Court Orders Fencing To Prevent Dogs On Premises

The top court, during the hearing, directed all States and Union Territories to identify public places like bus stands, Railway stations, district hospitals, public sports complexes and ensure that premises are fully equipped with adequate fencing to prevent stray dogs from entering the campus.

The top court, outlining a time frame, ordered that places should be identified within two weeks and the fencing work should be done within 8 weeks.

SC Refuses Modification In Order

The apex court refused to entertain any modification petitions after counsels present in the courtroom urged the Bench to hear their submissions and modify the directions.
