Swati Maliwal Assault Case: Delhi Police will not record the statement of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's parents today, news agency ANI reported citing sources. This development comes after Kejriwal, who is out on bail in the Excise policy case, claimed that the Delhi police will interrogate his "ailing" parents in the Swati Maliwal assault case. Attacking the BJP over the issue, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders have questioned the party if they thought Kejriwal’s parents were involved in the alleged assault.

Tension within the AAP began after party MP Swati Maliwal claimed that she was assaulted by Kejriwal’s personal assistant Bibhav Kumar when she went to meet the chief minister on May 13. The police have registered a case and arrested Kumar.

"I entered the drawing room and was waiting there. Bibhav arrived and began to abuse me verbally. Without any provocation, he repeatedly slapped me... I yelled, pleading for him to stop and let me go, but he persisted in assaulting me while hurling insults in Hindi," the AAP MP said in the statement.

AAP's senior leader and Delhi cabinet minister, Atishi, accused the BJP of conspiring against Kejriwal since his release on interim bail. She claimed that Prime Minister Modi directed Delhi Police to interrogate Kejriwal's parents, labelling it a "cheap tactic".

"Now they used a cheap tactic. PM Modi has asked his Delhi Police to question Kejriwal’s elderly and ailing parents," she claimed and added that the people of Delhi will respond to it with their votes.

“I want to ask the PM and BJP. His parents are aged around 80-85. Kejriwal’s father cannot walk without support. His mother spent a long time in hospital and came back recently. Does he believe that they assaulted Maliwal? Do they think that Maliwal who was threatening police personnel as seen in a video footage was attacked by the elderly people? Have they stooped to this level that they will carry out atrocities on his parents and target him?” she said as quoted by news agency PTI.

Kejriwal, in his initial response to the assault allegations, stressed the need for a fair investigation and refrained from further comment to avoid prejudicing legal proceedings.
