Tamil Nadu Politics: In a major update in the politics of Tamil Nadu, a faction of the AIADMK, led by CV Shanmugam, has extended its support to the Chief Minister Vijay-led TVK alliance. While talking to the reporters, Shanmugam stated that the move was essential for the revival of the party. He further alleged that EPS wanted an alliance with DMK, adding that the "unholy alliance" would have led to a crisis.
"We founded this party against the DMK. For 53 years, our politics was against it. Given this, a proposal suggesting an AIADMK government with DMK support was rejected....If we formed such an alliance, AIADMK would not exist," he told the reporters.

"We currently stand without any alliance... our focus must be on revitalising and strengthening our party. We ultimately decided to extend our support to the TVK, which emerged victorious," the senior AIADMK leader added.
Apart from this, SP Velumani, another leader supporting the move, claimed that there was no split, adding that the faction was waiting EPS to take the "right" decision. "This isn't breakup of AIADMK...will await General Secretary's 'right' decision to take party forward," Velumani said.
However, DMK leader Bharati alleged that MLA Shanmugam decided to 'split' AIADMK to support the TVK, adding that he has been hunting reasons to justify his actions. The DMK also stated that Shanmugam's allegations of AIADMK approaching the MK Stalin-led party was false.
The rebel group has also stated that the party would cut all the ties from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The party has suffered multiple defeats at the state and central elections since the demise of its veteran J Jayalalitha. One of the main reason behind its downfall has been multiple factions and a weak organisation.
Vijay's TVK emerged as the single largest party in the assembly election by winning 108 of the total 234 constituencies. While the party has formed the government with support of Congress, left forces, IUML, and VCK, a support from the AIADMK MLAs would make the setup more stable.
