A petrol bomb was thrown at a movie theatre in Tamil Nadu’s Tirunelveli district early Saturday morning, where the movie Amaran is being screened. The incident occurred outside Alangar Cinemas in Melapalayam while no injuries were reported as the premises were unoccupied at the time, police said. 

CCTV footage showed two unidentified individuals hurling the bomb and an investigation is underway to identify the miscreants. Authorities are exploring various angles, including potential opposition to the movie, which sparked controversy in the state.   

Amaran Film Criticism 

Amaran, starring Sivakarthikeyan and Sai Pallavi, is a biographical drama about Army Major Mukund Varadarajan, who laid his life in service of the nation during a military operation in Jammu and Kashmir in 2014 and was posthumously awarded the Ashok Chakra. While praised for its direction and performances, the film drew criticism from certain groups for alleged misrepresentation of Kashmiri communities.

A week earlier, members of the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) staged a protest in Coimbatore, alleging that the film portrayed Muslims negatively. Nearly 100 protesters gathered outside Shanthi Theatre on November 8, demanding a ban on the movie. SDPI leaders claimed the film propagated hate under the guise of patriotism, reported The Hindu.

Contrasting the criticism, the Tamil Nadu BJP unit advocated for the film to be screened in educational institutions, highlighting its patriotic themes. Additionally, despite controversies, Amaran has emerged as a box-office success, earning over Rs 150 crore within two weeks of its release.

Directed by Rajkumar Periasamy and released on October 31 during Diwali, the film is produced by Raaj Kamal Films International and Sony Pictures International Productions.
