Incessant rains have caused waterlogging in several parts of Tamil Nadu. Owing to the heavy downpour, the state government has declared a holiday for all schools, colleges, private institutions, banks and financial institutions in Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Kanyakumari and Tenkasi districts on Monday.

As many as 40 lakes in Kovilpatti area have reached their full capacity. As per the IMD, more rains are expected in Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, and Thoothukudi on December 13.  Besides, thunderstorms and lightning are likely to occur in parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal.

"40 lakes in Kovilpatti Panchayat are full. Two lakes were damaged and we repaired them. We are continuously monitoring other lakes too. If there is a breach in the lake, we are ready to fix it immediately," ANI quoted Rajesh, District Development Officer, Thoothukkudi district, as saying.  

“I have appointed responsible ministers and senior IAS officers to monitor the impact of #NorthEastMonsoon heavy rains in districts including Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Tenkasi and Kanyakumari. I request all people to cooperate with the precautionary measures taken by the government,” Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin posted on X (formerly Twitter).

KKSSR Ramachandran, Tamil Nadu revenue and Disaster Management minister said the government was taking all the measures to help people. He said over 250 State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel were deployed in Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Tuticorin and Tenkasi districts.

Many temporary camps have been established across the state to accommodate people during the calamity.
