Chennai Weather: Chennai is experiencing a drop in night-time temperatures, resulting in chilly conditions during the early mornings and evenings. The absence of cloud cover has led to what meteorologists call "radiation cooling," where the ground loses heat absorbed during the day. This phenomenon has made nights feel significantly colder in recent days.

Adding to the chill, moisture-laden easterly winds from the sea have produced mist in the mornings. As a result, residents have felt the bite of the cold, particularly in suburban areas where temperatures are expected to dip to around 18 degrees Celsius or lower.

Tamil Nadu Weather Forecast

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai, light to moderate rain is forecasted for one or two locations in coastal Tamil Nadu, including Puducherry and Karaikal. However, dry weather is anticipated in the interior regions of the state. Starting January 10, rain is expected to increase in frequency, with light to moderate showers predicted across coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, as well as in some interior parts of the state.

The Hindu report quoted P. Senthamarai Kannan, Director of the Area Cyclone Warning Centre, explaining that the lack of sunlight at night contributes to the cooling effect. He noted that the deviation from average temperatures during this time of year is typically only +/- 1 or 2 degrees Celsius. For instance, on Sunday at 5:30 PM, Nungambakkam recorded a maximum temperature of 30.3 degrees Celsius, slightly above the normal of 29.2 degrees. Similarly, Meenambakkam saw a maximum of 30.2 degrees Celsius, compared to the normal of 29.4 degrees.

Chennai 7-Day Weather Forecast

The upcoming weather forecast for Chennai shows mild temperatures throughout the week. On January 5 and 6, residents can expect fog and mist in the mornings, with partly cloudy skies later in the day and temperatures ranging between 23 degrees Celsius and 31 degrees Celsius. January 7 will also feature partly cloudy conditions but with temperatures fluctuating between 23 degrees Celsius and 30 degrees Celsius. From January 8 to 10, the city will likely experience generally cloudy skies with light rain and temperatures will range from 22 degrees Celsius to 30 degrees Celsius. Finally, rain is anticipated on January 11, with temperatures expected to be between 23 degrees Celsius and 29 degrees Celsius.
