Tamil Nadu Weather: After days of heavy thunderstorms across Tamil Nadu, the intensity of rainfall is expected to reduce gradually. According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai, scattered showers will continue in several parts of north Tamil Nadu until the weekend, while rainfall from September 22 may be limited to one or two places.
Tamil Nadu Weather: Heavy Rainfall Recorded
In the 24 hours ending at 8.30 AM on Friday (September 19), north Tamil Nadu received widespread downpours. Villupuram registered the highest rainfall at 19 cm, followed by Tirupattur at 17 cm. Officials noted that the vigorous southwest monsoon was the main factor behind the intense showers.

Weather Systems Influencing Rain
The current rainfall activity is linked to an upper air cyclonic circulation over north Andaman and the adjoining Myanmar coast, along with a trough extending from the central Bay of Bengal to the southern peninsula. These systems are likely to keep rainfall active across the State. Chennai saw pleasant weather on Friday as a result of these weather disturbances.
RMC Forecast For Chennai And South Tamil Nadu
The RMC said parts of south Tamil Nadu may also get light to moderate rain, with thunderstorms and gusty winds expected in isolated places until Sunday (September 21). Chennai’s maximum temperature is forecast at 32 degrees Celsius on Saturday, with moderate rain likely in some areas.
The Hindu report cited RMC head (in-charge) B. Amudha as stating that, weather systems forming over the Bay of Bengal usually bring daily thunderstorms to Chennai during the southwest monsoon. “At times, rainfall may exceed forecasts due to sudden development of cumulonimbus clouds,” she noted.
Tamil Nadu Weather Forecast
Officials added that Tamil Nadu may continue to see rainfall during the transition phase of the southwest monsoon’s withdrawal. A low-pressure area is also expected to form over the northeast Bay of Bengal after September 25.
