With a major chunk of Opposition lawmakers facing suspension, the Rajya Sabha will discuss three criminal bills today. The Lok Sabha on Wednesday passed the Bharatiya Nyaya (Second) Sanhita, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha (Second) Sanhita and the Bharatiya Sakshya (Second) Bills with as many as 97 opposition MPs missing owing to their suspension.

Over 46 MPs of Rajya Sabha are currently facing suspension and a smooth sail of the bills is expected as BJP’s 93 members will unanimously vote in its favour.

The three bills have featured in Rajya Sabha business for today.

The three bills to reform criminal laws were first introduced in Lok Sabha on August 11 during the monsoon session of Parliament.

As the bills passed in the lower house, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the British-era colonial laws would now be done away with. "Under the leadership of Modiji, I have brought bills that emphasized Indianness, the Indian Constitution and the well-being of the people. The laws are being changed in the spirit of the Constitution," he said.

Besides, Lok Sabha is expected to take up the CEC bill The bill aims to regulate the appointment, conditions of service, and term of office for the chief election commissioner (CEC) and other elections. The Rajya Sabha passed the bill on December 12.

It is noteworthy that 97 MPs will be missing from the lower house amid deliberations on the CEC bill.

Over 143 members of the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha were suspended staggered amid the Opposition’s ruckus over Parliament security breach.
