Maha Kumbh Stampede Claims Lives During Mauni Amavasya
The unfortunate incident took place earlier this week during Mauni Amavasya, a significant bathing day at the Maha Kumbh Mela. A sudden rush of pilgrims at the Sangam led to a deadly stampede, resulting in at least 30 deaths and injuring 90 others.
To investigate the incident, a three-member judicial commission has been set up. The panel recently visited Swaroop Rani Nehru Hospital in Prayagraj, where several injured pilgrims are receiving treatment. The commission will examine the cause of the tragedy and submit its findings within a month.
According to eyewitnesses, the stampede occurred when a large number of devotees rushed towards the Sangam to take a holy dip at the auspicious hour of 3 AM. The unexpected surge overwhelmed crowd management efforts, leading to panic and injuries.
Maha Kumbh 2025 Continues with Millions of Devotees
Despite the tragic incident, the religious gathering remains in full swing. On Saturday alone, over 5.42 million devotees bathed at the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati. This included more than a million Kalpavasis and 4.42 million other pilgrims.
Since the beginning of the event on January 13, over 314.6 million devotees have participated in the sacred bathing rituals.
Upcoming Snan Dates at Maha Kumbh 2025
The Maha Kumbh Mela will continue until February 26, with key bathing days (Shahi Snan) still ahead:
February 3 – Basant Panchami (Third Shahi Snan)
February 12 – Maghi Purnima
February 26 – Maha Shivaratri
Authorities are now focused on strengthening crowd control measures to prevent any further mishaps.
