UP Crime News: Disguised as a woman, a man in Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura set his married lover ablaze at her home after she refused to elope with him. The incident took place in Mathura's Koh Village, where a 28-year-old man, identified as Umesh, entered the victim’s home wearing a lehenga when she was alone. The victim, 30-year-old Rekha, suffered 70 percent burns.

According to Sanjay Kumar Pandey, the in-charge of Farah police station, Umesh, carrying a bottle of petrol, entered Rekha’s home through the terrace while she was alone, watching TV. Her children, aged seven and five, were at school, and her husband, Sanju, a farm laborer, was away at work. The accused insisted that she flee with him; however, Rekha refused. Enraged by her refusal, Umesh poured petrol on her and set her ablaze.

"Umesh was wearing a lehenga to disguise himself as a woman and was dropped off near the village by a friend on a motorcycle. He entered Rekha's house from the terrace, walked into her room, and pressured her to leave with him. When she refused, he poured petrol on her and set her on fire," Pandey said, as quoted by PTI.

Upon hearing her screams, neighbors rushed to the scene. Umesh attempted to escape by jumping from the terrace but sustained serious injuries. Both the victim and the accused were promptly taken to the Farah Community Health Centre for immediate medical assistance and were later referred to SN Medical College in Agra due to their critical condition.

A police inquiry revealed the familial connection between the victim and the accused. As per the investigation, Umesh, a resident of Hasanpur, Haryana, is the brother of Rekha’s elder sister-in-law. Over time, a romantic relationship developed between them. Rekha had eloped with Umesh in August last year but was brought back home from Himachal Pradesh in February after her family filed a police complaint.
