Uttarakhand News: Tensions escalated in Haldwani on Friday when residents and members of Hindu organisations demonstrated against foreign individuals who were reportedly operating businesses in the region using fake names and identities.
Protesters asserted that it is illegal to put up shop signs with false names in order to deceive clients, but authorities have done nothing about it. After a lot of effort, police and administrative authorities were able to settle the gathering.
The situation in Haldwani grew intense even more after the recent rape incident involving a minor girl in Nainital.
Police were called to the Kathgharia region on Friday after receiving reports of a procession being held there without formal authorisation. When they arrived on the site, they arrested four young people who were identified as Chandan, Jatin, Yatin, and Vipin Pandey. Tension in the region increased after the arrests since so many people gathered at the local police station.
SP Prakash Chandra and CO Nitin Lohani rushed to the site to calm the protesters amid concerns of growing conflict. Later, the Municipal Commissioner and City Magistrate AP Vajpayee joined them and spoke with the protesters.
The crowd was reassured by officials that those operating businesses and traveling from outside Haldwani would be thoroughly investigated. They also promised to take strong measures against anyone discovered to be breaking the law.
The young people in custody were released by 2:00 PM. BJP leader Sachin Sah, Gau Sevak Jogendra Rana, Kamal Durgapal, and a number of other people were present during the protest.
