Kedarnath is observing a warmer winter this year with minimum temperature hovering between minus five and minus seven degrees, higher than the season's normal temperature of 20 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, the maximum temperature was recorded between eight and 12 degrees Celsius. The picturesque region which used to turn into a white heaven during winter is also observing a prolonged dry spell with no snowfall. Due to no precipitation, dense fog is prevalent in the area during the morning and night.

"There has been very little rainfall and snowfall so far in winter. This time, the western disturbance remained weak since the monsoon season due to which rain clouds could not develop properly in the Himalayan regions. Owing to this, continuous fluctuations are also being observed in the temperature and the weather is drier than usual," Bikram Singh, Director, State Meteorological Center.

Meanwhile, Kargil is also witnessing an unprecedented dry spell and significantly higher temperatures than the season's usual. The minimum temperature in December is usually recorded between minus 19 degrees Celsius and minus 35 degrees Celsius, whereas it was recorded at minus 10.6 degrees Celsius this time. Natives have been engaging in special supplications across villages to pray for much-needed snowfall.
