Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Saturday urged to keep a watch on narratives by Congress leaders, which are drawing parallels between India and Bangladesh, saying that such statements are deeply concerning. How can Congress leaders and MPs that what happened in Bangladesh will happen in India, asked the Vice President.

Bangladesh witnessed a forced takeover of the democratically-elected Awami League government by Islamist-backed protestors after weeks-long civil unrest on August 5. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was ousted from his country after which she fled to long-term ally India in a bid to save her life.

Speaking at an event on Saturday, Dhankhar said: Be on watch out! Efforts by some to infuse a narrative that what happened in our neighbourhood is bound to happen in our Bharat is deeply concerning."

The Rajya Sabha chairman further asked: "How can a citizen of this country having been a Member of Parliament, and the other who has seen enough of Foreign Service takes no time in saying that what happened in the neighbourhood will happen in India!"

Dhankhar's remarks came in response to senior Congress leader Salman Khurshid's Tuesday statement when he had said that what happened in Bangladesh can happen in India.

"Everything may look normal on the surface", what is happening in Bangladesh could happen in India," the former Union Minister had said during a book launch.

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, who attended the event, mentioned on Wednesday that he was unable to clarify what Khurshid intended but noted that Bangladesh's broader message highlights the significance of democracy and holding free and fair elections.

BJP MP Rajiv Pratap Rudy criticised Khurshid, labelling his statements as "anarchist."
