In a big move to curb loud DJ music and consumption of alcohol in marriages, a village in Punjab’s Bathinda has come up with a unique idea to do away with such practices. The panchayat of Village Balla announced a Rs 21,000 cash reward for nuptials that would discourage the use of liquor and loud music.   

The initiative is part of the villagers’ campaign against drugs and for the betterment of their village.

The Sarpanch of Ballo village, Amarjeet Kaur, said on Tuesday that this decision was made to encourage villagers to avoid unnecessary expenses in wedding ceremonies and to curb alcohol consumption, as per Jagran.com. She mentioned that it is often observed that in village events where alcohol is served and loud music is played by DJs, it leads to fights and unrest. 

Sarpanch Amarjeet Kaur further stated that loud music also disrupts students' studies. She emphasised that the aim is to encourage people not to spend excessively on wedding ceremonies. She added that the Panchayat has passed a proposal stating that any family that does not serve alcohol or play DJ music at their wedding will be rewarded with Rs 21,000.

Ballo village has a population of about 5,000. Kaur also mentioned that the Panchayat has requested the government to build a stadium in the village to encourage youth participation in sports activities.

She stated that there should be a stadium in the village for various sporting events. The Panchayat has also proposed setting up a biogas plant in the village. Furthermore, she mentioned that free seeds will be provided to farmers practising organic farming.
