Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Friday said that the party will challenge the constitutionality of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill in the Supreme Court. The Rajya Sabha MP stated that the bill is an assault on the principles of the constitution, adding that the Congress will continue to resist such efforts. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Ramesh also listed the other issues flagged by the party that are being heard in the apex court.
“The INC will very soon be challenging in the Supreme Court the constitutionality of the Wakf (Amendment) Bill, 2024. We are confident and will continue to resist all assaults of the Modi Govt on the principles, provisions, and practices that are contained in the Constitution of India,” Jairam Ramesh stated in his post on X.
Ramesh further stated that the grand old party's intervention to uphold the letter and spirit of the Places of Worship Act is being heard in the apex court. "The INC's challenge to the validity of the amendments to the Conduct of Election Rules (2024) is being heard in the Supreme Court. The INC's intervention to uphold the letter and spirit of the Places of Worship Act, 1991 is being heard in the Supreme Court," he added.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday reacted after the Waqf (Amendment) bill got a nod from both houses of the parliament. He stated that the bill will help the marginalised section of society, referring to it as a "watershed moment".
"The passage of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill and the Mussalman Wakf (Repeal) Bill by both Houses of Parliament marks a watershed moment in our collective quest for socio-economic justice, transparency and inclusive growth. This will particularly help those who have long remained on the margins, thus being denied both voice and opportunity," PM Modi posted on X. The bill was passed in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha after a marathon debate.
