Weather Update: The winter chill is set to intensify in Delhi-NCR as temperatures are expected to drop further, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Northern cold winds are likely to make a comeback, leading to lower temperatures during both day and night. Meanwhile, several states, including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Rajasthan, have been placed on alert for rain and fog in the coming days.
The weather will continue to fluctuate, with temperatures rising at times and clouds covering the sky at others. On Wednesday, most northern states enjoyed bright sunshine, but the chilly winds ensured that the winter cold remained.
Thick Fog to Cover Delhi & UP
IMD predicts that Delhi and Uttar Pradesh will experience a further dip in temperatures on Thursday. If the wind remains calm in the early morning, dense fog may form, reducing visibility. The return of icy northern winds could lead to even colder days ahead.
Rain and Fog Alert for Multiple States
A weather warning has been issued for several states, including Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Bihar, where intermittent rain and thick fog are expected. Additionally, heavy rainfall is predicted in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya, while parts of Odisha, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and Sikkim could also witness dense fog, particularly during nighttime and early morning hours.
Light Rain & Snowfall Expected in Northern States
A western disturbance currently affecting western Afghanistan is expected to impact northwest India by February 8. As a result, the western Himalayan region may experience light rain and snowfall over the weekend. Other parts of India, however, are likely to remain dry.
Meanwhile, IMD has predicted light fog in Delhi-NCR.
In terms of temperatures, most regions in India will see maximum temperatures near or slightly above normal. However, Gujarat and its neighboring areas may experience colder-than-usual conditions, which could extend into central and eastern India after Thursday. Minimum temperatures across the country are expected to stay above normal.
Mild Fog in Delhi-NCR, Temperature to Drop
IMD forecasts light fog in Delhi-NCR on Thursday morning, with clear skies expected later in the day. The maximum and minimum temperatures will hover around 25°C and 9°C, respectively.
Over the next few days, temperatures are predicted to rise slightly. On Wednesday, Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 23.7°C, 0.4°C above normal, while the minimum temperature was 11.0°C, 1.6°C above normal. The humidity levels fluctuated between 93% and 47%.
Delhi’s Air Quality Remains 'Poor'
Delhi continues to struggle with poor air quality. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), 17 locations in the capital recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) above 300 on Wednesday, placing them in the 'Very Poor' category. However, the overall AQI for the city stayed just under 300, categorizing it as 'Poor.'
Experts predict that Delhi’s air quality will remain in the same range for the next two days due to various weather and pollution-related factors. Residents are advised to take precautions and limit outdoor activities, especially during peak pollution hours.
