Weather Today: Due to the activation of a western disturbance, dense fog and a cold wave have gripped most parts of North India. Thick fog in Delhi and the surrounding regions reduced visibility on Monday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that the weather will remain consistently cold until December 31, while daytime temperatures are expected to rise from the first day of the new year.

On Sunday, rail and air traffic were disrupted, with several long-distance trains running hours behind schedule and flight operations also impacted.

In view of the severe cold and severe cold wave in Uttar Pradesh, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has ordered all schools up to grade 12 to remain closed until January 1. This order applies to schools across all boards, including ICSE, CBSE, and the UP Board. Officials have been instructed to remain on alert.

The Chief Minister said that in view of the cold wave, all officials should be constantly on the move in their respective areas and monitor arrangements on the ground. Adequate blankets and bonfires should be provided for those in need in all districts. No one should be forced to sleep in the open. To this end, all necessary amenities, such as warm bedding, sanitation, drinking water, and lighting, should be provided in night shelters.

North India India Weather

In Bihar, Patna recorded a minimum temperature of 10.9 degrees Celsius. Patna recorded a morning visibility of 100 metres, while Gayaji recorded the lowest visibility at 50 metres. Chhapra, Forbesganj, Buxar, Aurangabad, Arwal, and Jehanabad recorded minimum temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius.

Over half a dozen districts in Rajasthan recorded nighttime minimum temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius. Fatehpur recorded a low of 1 degrees Celsius.

The minimum temperature in Punjab districts hovered around three to four degrees Celsius. Faridkot recorded a low of 3.4 degrees Celsius.

The minimum temperature in Delhi on Sunday was 6.3 degrees Celsius, down 1.5 degrees Celsius from the previous day. Visibility at Safdarjung was just 100 metres at 8 am.

Delhi AQI Reaches Severe Category

Pollution levels in Delhi reached the severe category on Monday morning. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the air quality index (AQI) in the capital on Monday at 7 am was 402.

Trains Running Late

Dense fog has severely disrupted rail services, causing trains to run hours behind schedule. In Uttar Pradesh, most trains have been delayed by up to 18 hours, including premium services such as the Vande Bharat Express and the Rajdhani Express. More than a dozen trains passing through Patna were also affected, with delays ranging from 30 minutes to as much as 17 hours. Owing to poor visibility in Agra, railway authorities reverted to a semi-automatic signaling system in place of the automatic system to ensure safe operations.

In the semi-automatic signalling system, there is only one train between one station and another, whereas in the automatic signalling system, trains are operated at an interval of two to three kilometres.
